Financial Assistance and the Cost of IVF

Financial Assistance  and the Cost of IVF

At North Hudson IVF, our fertility specialists strive to make necessary infertility evaluation and treatment affordable so individuals and couples can live their dreams of raising a family. To help our patients with limited financial resources, we provide a variety of financing options to cover the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other infertility treatment services in our New Jersey practice, also serving the New York City metro area.

From a business point of view, there are two ways to run an IVF program: become an “in network provider” and accept only the “reasonable and customary” fees from insurance companies, or remain “out of network” and bill the patient directly.

In Network

If the IVF program opts to become an “in network provider,” insurance reimbursement for the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is generally low. The program is prohibited from billing the patient directly, except for copayments. Consequently the program must recoup their operating costs by increasing patient volume. This leads to the “fertility factory” business model. Since reimbursement for the cost of IVF is the same for every patient, there is no incentive to provide any services above the minimum required by the insurance company.

The advantage to a patient with coverage for the cost of in vitro fertilization is that there are few “out-of-pocket” expenses. This model is well worth it if you treatment is effective and the patient becomes pregnant. However, if the cycle is unsuccessful, getting answers from a busy doctor can prove to be very difficult.

Out of Network

The other business option is to remain “out-of-network” and bill the patient directly. This type of program does not require a high patient volume and allows doctors to go the extra mile for each patient with extended consultations and detailed information on infertility treatment.

Because of the lower patient volume, the doctor has more time to spend with each patient. Because infertility treatments are complex, stressful and bring up all kinds of feelings, that extra support can really help get you through. The down side is that out-of-network treatment is more expensive. In many cases, this point is arguable because most patients have neither in-network nor out-of-network coverage for the cost of IVF or other infertility treatments at our New Jersey office.

The bottom line is you get what you pay for.
