Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

What is Intrauterine Insemination – IUI?

Intrauterine insemination or IUI is often a mystery to our patients who come to see us at our northern New Jersey fertility practice. The IUI treatment, in essence, places washed sperm straight into the uterus. Situating the strongest sperm directly in the uterus greatly raises the number of sperm that reach the Fallopian tubes and increases chances for egg fertilization.

Why is IUI Necessary?

Following intercourse, the sperm must make their way from the inhospitable environment of the vagina into the cervix, through the uterus and to the top of the Fallopian tubes to meet the freshly ovulated egg. However, this can prove to be too challenging for the little guys and they require assistance getting to the site of fertilization.

Intrauterine insemination can also be performed to deal with conditions such as:

  • Inability to sexually perform
  • Decreased mobility of the sperm
  • Low sperm count
  • A hostile cervical environment

How is Intrauterine Insemination Performed?

Intrauterine insemination – IUI has been performed at our northern New Jersey fertility practice hundreds of times under the safest conditions. Typically, the semen is collected by masturbation and the sperm are washed free of the liquid portion of the semen (seminal plasma). During the washing procedure, the best swimmers are isolated from the non-motile and slow moving sperm.

Very near the time of ovulation, (9 hours after the beginning of the luteinizing hormone surge), this enhanced population of sperm is introduced directly to the uterus using a very small plastic tube (a catheter) inserted through the cervix. The sperm now have a much greater chance of making their way up the short distance to the Fallopian tubes to meet the egg. Intrauterine insemination is usually painless, but some women report a little cramping for a few minutes after the insemination.
